End-items
An end-item is practically the same as an assembly, it has a 'bill of materials' (BOM) that can have multiple levels as well, or just one assembly (how complex it can be).
Traceability
The one big difference is that an end-item can be used to assign a serial or frame number.
This gives you the opportunity to track specific products, for example, a (custom build) bicycle and its BOM, so you know which clients has which set-up. Which is not only very practical for you during the build or for the customer, but also for when the authorities knock on the door, they demand traceability in some markets. So end-items can be used to build that system, if you want to track that in Verso.
Sellable products
Another distinction that can be made between assemblies and end-items when you don't use the serial or frame number field, that all end-items are sellable products and all assemblies are just for you. For example you can add the packaging material needed in an end-item.
